CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

I SAT AGAINST THE SUBURBAN door leaning up on my hip, my legs stretched out, crossed at the ankles, on center seat. The handsome male driving us around the winding roads had a hand on my bare knee as we made our way back to Lake Crescent.

Gone was my steady, boring life of traveling from one class to the next, year after year, packing my brain with facts and knowledge I had no idea when or if I would ever use, with no end goal in sight. Apparently, nature had a plan. It just took a bit to catch up to me. And I was fortunate and grateful it had caught up with me so soon. As Taber said, I could’ve gone years, possibly my entire long life, and never have known the sakana connection I had with Sorin now.

“Well, I’ve crossed one thing off my bucket list and added another.”

“You’re too young to have a bucket list.”

I cringed. Too young.

His gaze shifted toward me, a don’t go there look in his eyes as his fingers squeezed my knee. “You know what I mean.”

“Yeah. Bucket lists are for the old—those who haven’t finished living before they find they’re close to death.” I peered out through the rain-splashed windshield at the road that wound this way and that through the trees. “Maybe bucket lists are also for those who’ve wasted time not living life to the fullest—focusing on things that didn’t really matter—just surviving.”

I’d done that.

I’d spent years in college believing if I couldn’t have any other kind of life, a male who wanted me—who loved me, at least I’d be well-educated. Looking back, I couldn’t remember taking one damn class that would’ve prepared me for what was to come. Anything and everything that was important to the duty he and I would take on as Alphas, we would learn through on-the-job training. Trial and error. Common sense. Wolf-sense.

And we’d be together.

“Do you have a bucket list?”

“Not until I met you.”

“Maybe you needed someone to share the bucket list experience with.”

“Well, since ninety-nine percent of my newly formed list involves various sexual activities with you, I’ll have to agree.”

“Ninety-nine percent? What’s the other one percent involve?”

“Dancing.” He grinned. “I guess we’d better get that one percent done before I’m too old, and gray, and crippled to get out on the dance floor.”

“You’re not old, Sorin. Seventy-five isn’t old. You haven’t even lived a third of your life yet.”

A small smile curved his lips, causing a little crease in his cheek. “I don’t remember discussing my exact age.”

“Same age as Taber.” I shrugged. “Sela looked him up online before she bred with him, to check out his lineage. Stuff like that.”

“I see.” His hand roamed slowly up and down my thigh. “So, what did you check off?”

“Making out in a car, and doing it right, because the first time didn’t count.”

He chuckled. “What did you add?”

“Having sex in a car.” I rested my head against the headrest. “And so you know,
